Snakes of Croatia
Although there are sixteen species of snakes in Croatia, along the Adriatic coast you want find all species. Unfortunately these lovely creatures have bad reputaion and often because of fear are classified as venomous and that’s how people treating them. The most common types that you can meet walking along the coast is the hieropsis gemonensis
kissing? 🙂 i found them stuck like this
this one come in my garden pond
my kid adore them
The only venomous snake that lives along the coast is nose-horned viper (Vipera ammodytes) and because of it all snakes have bad reputation.
It’s actually quite rare to find the horned viper, I often looking for them to photograph it but often without success. Snakes are lovely and at the end very useful creatures that live their lives and do not pay attention to people unless they enter in human habitat what often end up fatally for snakes. Rustling through the grass is most likely from lizard pseudops apodus – harmless snakelike lizard
or from this beauty lizard- Lacerta viridis and not from snakes.
If you meet any of these beauties in nature is enough to stay calm, they will continue to move without fear and you will be able to enjoy their presence. Please note that all snakes in Croatia are protected. They have some natural enemies here like this eagle ( circaetus gallicus )
or maybe some marten
