Playful fisher – Common tern ( Sterna hirundo )

After an entire year traveling over the seas this lovely bird arrives at early spring on the Adriatic coast looking for a place to raise chicks. It usually chooses small islands near the coast. The small island can be completely without of vegetation. In this way tern avoid the rats and mices that could jeopardize the eggs and young. To protect themselves from other predators, such as gulls, owls and falcons, eggs and young are camouflage so they are harder to spot on the ground, beside that adult terns attack any intruder and fiercely defend the colony, if you get too close, you can expect and attack with feces 🙂sterna hirundo (1) sterna hirundo (3) sterna hirundo (4) sterna hirundo (5) sterna hirundo (6) sterna hirundo (7) sterna hirundo (16) sterna hirundo (18) sterna hirundo (21) sterna hirundo (22) sterna hirundo eggs (2) sterna hirundo eggs (3) sterna hirundo eggs (4) sterna hirundo eggs (5) sterna hirundo eggs (6)

This bird eats only fish that deftly captures diving suddenly into the sea. If you accidentally tumble near colony on some small island while sailing it is best to move away from island and watch them from distance, otherwise the eggs can eventually cooled or some predator can take advantage of the opportunity and grabbed the egg or young terns.
