Her majesty – Bougainvillea
Although native to South America this climber plant is already so domesticated in the Mediterranean that is impossible to imagine any Mediterranean garden without her or garden design. There are many varieties of this plant like whole range of colors from white to purple, shapes of flower(bracts) and leaves and resistance, but they all have in common that they love warm, sunny and sheltered position in the garden. Some grow only a few meters , and some up to 20m in height. In this region most common is purple “Formosa” as the most resistant to cold and therefore with the most flowers during the summer. Towards the south and on the Dalmatian islands where the winter temperature slightly higher or where the temperature don’t stays below zero for too long you can find other subspecies. Mostly bloom all spring and summer on several occasions, and bring so much liveliness and the amount of color in the garden that almost you do not need any other flower.
